Rhinoplasty Surgeon in Essex County
Also Offering Nose Surgery for Morris & Union Counties
If you are frustrated by the appearance of your nose, you are not alone. Rhinoplasty (also known as nose reshaping surgery, nose surgery or nose job) was one of the most requested plastic surgery procedures in 2012, second only to breast augmentation. About 250,000 Americans underwent nose surgery in 2012.
With nose reshaping surgery, New Jersey plastic surgeon Dr. Erwin Bulan can alter the size or shape of your nose. He can create a more aesthetically pleasing profile or bring a sense of proportion to facial features. He can even correct chronic breathing problems.
At Bulan Plastic Surgery, we look forward to giving you the nose and overall facial profile you desire, so you are pleased with what you see when you look in the mirror.
Benefits of Rhinoplasty
You may benefit from nose reshaping surgery if you would like to correct one of the following:
- A nose that is too large or wide
- A nose that is not proportionate to other facial features
- A crooked nose
- A nose with an arch that is too big, sometimes called a “Roman” nose
- A nose that has suffered damage from trauma or sports injury
- Inherent nasal abnormalities
- Chronic breathing problems
In addition to benefiting from nose reshaping surgery, you may also benefit from a complementary cosmetic surgery such as chin augmentation or a nonsurgical procedure such as BOTOX injection treatment. Dr. Bulan will review your aesthetic goals with you during consultation and recommend the best treatment protocol to achieve those goals.
How Rhinoplasty Works
It typically takes Dr. Bulan 1-3 hours to perform nose surgery, depending on your individual nasal structure and the complexity of your situation. Nose reshaping is an outpatient surgery, so you will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from the surgical center.
After administering anesthesia, Dr. Bulan starts nose reshaping surgery by making miniscule incisions in the nasal area. Through the incisions, he accesses the underlying nasal structure, lifting the soft tissues that envelop the nose. The experienced plastic surgeon then reshapes the exposed cartilage and bone, constructing a new nasal profile.
Dr. Bulan can help you achieve a variety of surgical goals, including correcting a deviated septum, reducing the nose or augmenting the nasal structure. If you wish to augment your nose, Dr. Bulan will graft cartilage from the nasal septum or ear onto the nose. If you wish to modify the size of your nostrils, Dr. Bulan may place additional stitches in the creases of your nostrils.
Once Dr. Bulan is satisfied with the newly sculpted nose, he closes any incisions with stitches. He then secures the treated area with internal tubes and a splint.
Open vs. Closed Approach
There are two main approaches to nose surgery: open and closed. In the open approach, Dr. Bulan makes the incisions on the columella, the medial nostril strip, giving him the best visibility and control during the procedure.
In the closed approach, Dr. Bulan positions the incisions inside the nose. Although this technique reduces the amount of control that the plastic surgeon has during the procedure, it allows for faster healing and less-visible scars. Together, Dr. Bulan and you will decide which approach to use.
What to Expect After Nose Surgery
Once the effects of the anesthesia have worn off, you will be released to an authorized individual. Leave any dressings that Dr. Bulan has placed on the treated area in place. Dr. Bulan will remove any dressings and stitches about a week after surgery at one of your follow-up appointments.
The treated area may be swollen or bruised, but these symptoms usually diminish in a few weeks. You may experience mild pain or discomfort after nose surgery. To minimize discomfort, apply ice packs and take oral pain relievers as directed by Dr. Bulan.
You should expect to take 1-2 weeks off from work, resting and limiting any physical activity during that time. Although the initial swelling subsides relatively quickly after surgery, you may not see full aesthetic results for several months to a year as the body heals, further refining the nasal profile.
To optimize your aesthetic results and minimize the risk of surgical complications, be sure to adhere to all of Dr. Bulan’s care instructions, both before and after surgery.
