What Exactly Is Acne?

Acne Vulgaris, or “acne,” is a common condition in which sebaceous glands become obstructed, causing pimples and sometimes deeper cysts to develop on the face, neck, shoulders, back, chest and upper arms.

Acne initially starts to develop during puberty, but it typically affects teenagers. Adults can suffer from acne as well. Some 85 percent of people ages 12 to 25 suffer from acne. Severe acne can lead to scarring, and even milder cases of acne can cause scarring if treated incorrectly.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING ACNE SCAR TREATMENT

Our first priority is to control any active outbreaks of acne using a combination of skin care products and microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical treatment that gently exfoliates dead skin cells and gets rid of bacteria and other impurities. It is not painful and can be performed in our office in less than an hour. Depending on what we believe will be of the greatest benefit to you, we may recommend a series of microdermabrasion treatments.

For the resultant acne scarring, we can use various resurfacing techniques to eliminate the top layer of damaged skin cells and stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanism for smoother, healthier skin. This reduces or eliminates noticeable scarring and results in a more even-looking complexion. Depending on the severity of the skin surface irregularity, we may recommend more microdermabrasion treatments or a laser resurfacing treatment.

Fractionated Laser Skin Resurfacing

Our team has seen great results for acne scars with fractionated ablative laser resurfacing. This approach involves using thousands of tiny beams of light to treat a fraction of the skin in the target area; the treated areas are surrounded by untreated tissue. This approach reduces recovery downtime associated with other forms of laser skin resurfacing. We can use a fractionated erbium laser or a fractionated CO2 laser, depending on the degree of skin surface irregularity.

Each laser treatment session lasts about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the complexity of your situation. You may experience minor discomfort during treatment, which has been described as a series of rubber band snaps to the skin. However, we minimize any discomfort by administering a topical anesthetic or applying an icepack to the treated area. Any discomfort is usually well-tolerated during the quick treatment session.

Dermal Fillers

For significant acne scar depressions, we can use fillers formulated with hyaluronic acid or other ingredients to help improve the contour of the skin. We inject the filler into the depression and it “inflates” or “cushions” the area, evening out the visible transition between the depression and the surrounding skin. Depending on the type of filler, the results can last anywhere from a few months up to a year or more. Generally, filler injections must be repeated to maintain the effects long-term.

Good Candidates for Acne Scar Treatment

You may be a good candidate for acne scar treatment if you:

  • Have scars that are red and/or uneven in texture
  • Are not experiencing any active acne outbreaks
  • Are in good overall health
  • Have reasonable expectations of treatment

The team at Bulan Plastic Surgery can discuss further criteria for acne scar treatment candidacy during an in-person consultation, and address any questions or concerns you have.

Frequently Asked Questions about Acne Scar Treatment

Does Treatment Hurt?

Some patients experience mild discomfort, depending on the specific treatment and their personal pain threshold. Prior to treatment, we can apply a topical anesthesia or ice packs to numb the area and minimize discomfort.

How Long Does It Take To See Results From Treatment?

Some patients see improvements within a few days after treatment. It can take up to six weeks for scars to visibly fade.

Will My Face Be Red?

It is common for treated skin to be pink or red after treatment. The severity of the pinkness or redness depends on the type and depth of treatment.

How Many Sessions are Required to Eliminate Acne Scars?

In some cases, a single microdermabrasion or laser treatment produces the desired results, but normally a series of treatments delivers the best outcomes. With fillers, a single session can produce results, but the injections must be repeated on a regular basis to maintain the effects long-term.

Is There Any Downtime?

There is no downtime after filler injection. After microdermabrasion, the skin may be slightly pink or warm for about a day. Fractionated laser resurfacing requires less downtime than other forms or resurfacing, with most side effects subsiding within a few days to a week.

Will The Scars Ever Return?

Scarring should not return after treatment; however, future acne outbreaks can lead to new scars. It is important to have acne controlled before seeking treatment for scars, and prevent future outbreaks with the help of a professional skin care team.
