“Daddy Do-Over” Requests on the Rise

Move over mommy makeover: more men are seeking cosmetic procedures to improve their confidence and appearance after acquiring a “dad bod.” According to the latest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 1.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed on men in 2018, a 29 percent increase since 2000.

Many of these men are requesting what’s being called a “daddy do-over.” Similar to mommy makeover, the daddy-do-over treatment involves combining two or more cosmetic procedures into a single operation. Combinations can include surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures that focus on the face and body.

Read on as Dr. Erwin Bulan, an elite Northern New Jersey plastic surgeon, shares the most popular daddy do-over requests.

Top Surgical Procedures Requested by Men

More than 200,000 surgical procedures were performed on men in 2018. Rhinoplasty was the most popular procedure with more than 52,000 procedures performed. Also known as nose reshaping surgery, rhinoplasty changes the shape, size and proportions of the nose for a more attractive and balanced facial appearance. Eyelid surgery was second with more than 24,000 procedures. This facial rejuvenation procedure is popular among fathers and older men thanks to its ability to lift and tighten droopy eyelids and restore a youthful and energetic appearance.

Liposuction and male breast reduction surgery came in third and fourth place respectively. The “dad bod” is real, and body contouring procedures like liposuction and male breast reduction help tighten and tone body areas when diet and exercise fall short. Hair transplantation came in fifth with a 17 percent increase since 2017.

Top Non-Surgical Procedures Requested by Men

Botox was the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure among men with more than 450,000 procedures. Like women, many men are bothered by wrinkles and fine lines, and wish to soften their appearance with minimally invasive techniques like Botox. Dr. Bulan himself has seen an increase in Botox requests from fathers who wish to look as young as they feel.

Laser hair removal was the second most popular treatment, while microdermabrasion, an exfoliative skin treatment, came in third. Chemical peels and dermal fillers rounded out the top five.
