Tummy Tuck with Liposuction (Lipoabdominoplasty)

Do you want to eliminate stubborn fat deposits from your midsection? Do you also want to remove loose skin that has lost its elasticity from your abdominal area? In addition, do you wish you could improve the muscle tone of your severely weakened stomach muscles?

If you have various aesthetic concerns regarding your abdominal profile, lipo-abdominoplasty with Union / Essex County plastic surgeon specialist Dr. Erwin Bulan may be right for you.

WHAT TRADITIONAL TUMMY TUCK TREATS

The natural aging process, hereditary factors, major weight loss and pregnancy can cause the skin in the abdominal area to lose elasticity and hang off the body. Pregnancy can also cause abdominal muscles to become extremely weak or even separated. Traditional abdominoplasty (“tummy tuck” surgery) is a plastic surgery procedure designed to improve these aesthetic issues.

With traditional tummy tuck, Dr. Bulan first creates a horizontal incision in the pubic area that extends from hipbone to hipbone. He makes the incision in an inconspicuous place that can be easily concealed by an underwear or bikini line. Dr. Bulan then tightens weakened or separated stomach muscles by strategically placing sutures in the connective tissue that supports the abdominal muscles. This often gives the appearance of “six-pack” abdominal muscles. He next eliminates excess abdominal skin and adjusts the navel to align with the newly contoured abdomen before closing the original incision with stitches.

HOW LIPOABDOMINOPLASTY DIFFERS FROM TRADITIONAL TUMMY TUCK

Tummy tuck alone can help correct lax skin and weakened muscles throughout the midsection. By itself, however, tummy tuck surgery does not address any excess fat that may be in the area. That is where lipoplasty, or liposuction surgery, comes in.

With lipo-abdominoplasty, Dr. Bulan adds liposuction to traditional abdominoplasty to get “lipo-abdominoplasty.” The combination of techniques allows Dr. Bulan to contour the abdominal profile better than he can with tummy tuck alone.

WHAT DOES LIPOABDOMINOPLASTY INVOLVE?

Lipoabdominoplasty involves several components. First, Dr. Bulan performs the tummy tuck procedural steps. He tightens abdominal muscles that may have loosened or separated due to pregnancy, weight fluctuation or aging. He removes loose folds of skin that may hang or sag off of the lower abdomen, and he tightens the remaining abdominal skin. In some cases, stretch marks may be eliminated if they are visible on the skin that is trimmed during surgery. The tummy tuck portion of the procedure makes the abdomen look flatter and smoother.

Next, Dr. Bulan performs the liposuction portion of the procedure. He removes unwanted fat from the front and sides of the stomach. He carefully contours and defines the waist, giving the body an attractive hourglass-like shape. Dr. Bulan can also treat excess fat on the upper abdomen, back, hips and “bra strap” area if needed, to accentuate the shape and curves of the stomach and waist.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LIPOABDOMINOPLASTY?

You may be a good candidate for lipoabdominoplasty if you meet the following criteria:

You have excess skin and fat deposits around your waist or abdomen. Your skin may have stretched due to pregnancy, significant weight fluctuation or aging. No matter what the cause, it is nearly impossible for loose, saggy skin to contract or “snap back” into place. Also, it can be very difficult to spot-tone stubborn areas of fat with exercise or diet changes.

You are at or close to your ideal weight. Lipoabdominoplasty is not a viable way to lose weight. You should be at, or close to, your target weight and in good physical shape. Being at or near your goal weight helps Dr. Bulan plan out treatment to deliver the best possible aesthetic result for your body. You do not plan to have children after surgery. Although it is possible to become pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy and baby following lipoabdominoplasty, it is not recommended. Pregnancy can have an adverse effect on your lipoabdominoplasty results. For the longest-lasting and best outcomes, you are encouraged to postpone lipoabdominoplasty until you have finished having biological children.

You do not smoke or have health problems. As with any surgery, lipoabdominoplasty carries some risks. These risks increase if you smoke or have pre-existing conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease or other medical problems. Smoking can also hinder the healing process after lipoabdominoplasty.

The best way to determine your candidacy for lipoabdominoplasty is to meet with Dr. Bulan for a comprehensive one-on-one evaluation. During the appointment, Dr. Bulan will examine your stomach and review your goals and medical history. If he feels the procedure is a sensible solution to your needs, he can lay out a treatment plan, step by step, to help you achieve your objectives.

MORE ABOUT LIPOSUCTION

During liposuction, Dr. Bulan makes a small incision in the targeted area. He then inserts a cannula (a thin, hollow tube), which suctions out unwanted fat from under the skin. Often, Dr. Bulan uses power-assisted vibrations or laser energy to facilitate the fat removal.

By combining liposuction with abdominoplasty, Dr. Bulan can avoid making secondary incisions in the treated area because he uses the incision that he has already created for abdominoplasty. Thus, he can further sculpt the treated area for a flatter, firmer abdominal profile without the need for a separate surgical procedure and the added recovery time that a separate procedure entails.

BENEFITS OF LIPOABDOMINOPLASTY

By taking advantage of lipoabdominoplasty, you can enjoy more comprehensive body contouring results than what can be achieved with a tummy tuck or lipo alone. You will love your new hourglass-like silhouette. Not only will your stomach look flatter and smoother after your surgery, but your waist will look narrower and more defined. It will be easier to find clothing that fits and flatters your physique, and you will be able to confidently wear tight-fitting clothing, athletic apparel and bathing suits. You will not have loose folds of skin that hang uncomfortably over the waist of your pants or hinder your exercise routine or favorite activities.
