With male breast reduction surgery, Dr. Erwin Bulan, board-certified plastic surgeon and founder of Bulan Plastic Surgery, surgically removes excess tissue and fat from this problem area, resulting in a firmer, flatter chest profile.
Once you contact Dr. Bulan, you will never again have to shy away from a trip to the beach, so do not delay!
WHY DO SOME MEN HAVE GYNECOMASTIA?
Gynecomastia is the result of fluctuations in hormones. More specifically, the growth of the glandular tissue in the breasts is triggered by a decrease in the testosterone hormone and an increase in the estrogen hormone.
Several things can throw off the normal balance of the hormones and lead to “man boobs,” including the following:
- The natural aging process
- Going through puberty
- Certain medications: Anti-androgens, anabolic steroids, antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications and medications used to treat cancer have been known to cause gynecomastia.
- Tumors (particularly those that affect the testes, adrenal gland or pituitary glands)
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Use of marijuana, heroin and other street drugs
- Use of anabolic steroids
- Medical conditions that interfere with testosterone production (e.g., Klinefelter’s syndrome)
- Kidney or liver disease/failure
- Hyperthyroidism (i.e., when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroxine hormone)
- Use of certain plant oils (e.g., lavender or tea tree) that have ingredients with estrogen-like properties
If you are a man with large breasts, it’s important to determine the underlying cause of your gynecomastia. Though the chances are low, you could have an unknown medical condition that is contributing to your breast growth. You should schedule an appointment with a doctor to be evaluated.
During your appointment, the doctor will perform a physical examination and inquire about your medical history, your family’s health history and your drug and alcohol use. The doctor may order some tests like a mammogram or CT scan if needed.
If the excessive breast tissue bothers you and an underlying medical condition has been ruled out, you may want to consider surgical breast reduction.
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR MALE BREAST REDUCTION?
You may be a good candidate for male breast reduction if:
- You feel self-conscious or embarrassed by oversized, woman-like breasts.
- You are at least 18 years old.
- Your breast growth appears to have stabilized. If your breasts are still growing, you should hold off on having surgery.
- You do not have an underlying medical condition that is contributing to your breast growth (as determined by a doctor).
- You are not taking any medications that contribute to breast growth or that could affect your surgery.
- You are in good general health. If you have a serious or life-threatening illness like diabetes or heart disease, you should not have surgery.
- You are not seriously overweight or obese. If you are overweight, you should try to attain a healthy weight with diet and exercise before pursuing surgery.
- You do not smoke, drink a lot of alcohol or use drugs.
- You have specific and realistic goals of treatment. You should desire improvement, not absolute perfection. You should understand that you may have some scarring from surgery.
- You understand and accept the possible risks of surgery.
- You have a positive attitude about surgery and its outcomes.
Ultimately, whether you are a suitable candidate for male breast reduction is up to a plastic surgeon. To meet with board certified plastic surgeon Erwin Bulan and discuss your qualifications for surgery, please schedule an in-person consultation at our New Jersey practice.
INITIAL GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY CONSULTATION
By visiting the Bulan Plastic Surgery website to find out more about male breast reduction surgery, you have already taken the first step in getting the body you deserve. The next step is to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Bulan. That way, he can evaluate your condition and medical history, ask you some questions about your surgical goals, answer your questions about male breast reduction surgery and recommend an appropriate course of action.
It is important to point out that male breast reduction is a surgical procedure, so it is crucial for you to undergo treatment with a board-certified plastic surgeon who has extensive experience with gynecomastia. An inexperienced cosmetic surgeon who has never treated this condition may recommend an ineffective treatment protocol. For instance, severe gynecomastia cannot be treated with liposuction by itself, and directly addressing the glandular tissue with excision may be required. This is often times the cause of a suboptimal result in gynecomastia surgery.
That is why undergoing male breast reduction surgery with board-certified Essex County plastic surgeon Dr. Bulan is an excellent decision. Dr. Bulan has 10 years of experience, was named a Top Doctor by New Jersey Family magazine and Consumer Research Council, and received the Recognition Award from the Medical Society of New Jersey Physicians. He has the experience, clinical vision and surgical talent you need to get the results you want.
MALE BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY DETAILS
Before your scheduled surgery, Dr. Bulan will provide you with comprehensive instructions regarding how to prepare for and recover from male breast reduction surgery. Note that the Northern New Jersey plastic surgeon performs male breast reduction surgery on an outpatient basis, so you will need someone to drive you to and from surgery.
Once anesthesia has been administered, Dr. Bulan starts male breast reduction surgery by performing liposuction if needed. He inserts a thin, hollow tube called a cannula under the surface of the breast skin to remove excess fat from the area. (If you have mildly enlarged breasts that are predominantly caused by an excess of breast fat, liposuction on its own may suffice to provide a flatter breast profile.)
If you have a severe case of gynecomastia in which enlarged breasts are predominantly caused by excess glandular tissue, Dr. Bulan then excises the excess breast tissue, as well as any surplus skin from the area. He can also reduce the size of the areola (the darkly pigmented skin that surrounds the nipple) or reposition the nipple as necessary.
Male breast reduction surgery requires incisions. However, Dr. Bulan is adept at placing incisions in inconspicuous places that are hard to detect with the naked eye.
Please know that every surgical procedure carries certain inherent risks. That said, Dr. Bulan takes every available precaution to minimize these risks. You can do your part to minimize the risk of complications and maximize your aesthetic results by closely adhering to all Dr. Bulan’s instructions prior to and following surgery.
MALE BREAST REDUCTION RECOVERY
Patients should focus on rest and relaxation in the first week, and rely on a loved one to take care of cooking and other chores. Dr. Bulan will prescribe pain medication to you to manage any lingering discomfort you may experience.
You will probably feel well enough to return to work and non-strenuous activity a week or two post-surgery. In the meantime, you should continue wearing the compression vest provided to you by Dr. Bulan as much as possible. In addition to holding your skin in place, it takes care of excess fluids and lowers your risk for infection and complications.
The results will gradually improve as healing progresses; final results are typically visible about six months after surgery. The results should be permanent, so long as you maintain a healthy weight moving forward. However, men who developed gynecomastia from hormone imbalance may see their gynecomastia return if the underlying causes are not addressed.
MALE BREAST REDUCTION FAQS
WHEN DOES GYNECOMASTIA OCCUR?
Gynecomastia most frequently occurs during the teenage years when puberty brings about hormonal changes. However, because gynecomastia can be caused by a number of factors, it can happen at any stage of life, from newborns to senior citizens.
WHY WON’T EXERCISE FIX MY GYNECOMASTIA?
Diet and exercise are certainly effective ways to lose weight, but that unfortunately does not work on the dense glandular tissue common with gynecomastia. Some men are disappointed to discover that a strict regimen seems to trim down the fat everywhere but their “man boobs.” If you are unhappy enough with the size of your chest, the most effective method is male breast reduction surgery.
WHAT WILL MY SCARS BE LIKE?
Although scarring is an inevitable part of male breast reduction, Dr. Bulan is careful to make incisions in such a way that they will fade and not be readily noticeable. Part of his strategy is to place the incisions along natural creases so they blend with the contours of your body. Ultimately, most patients agree that the confidence they gain from having a flatter, more manly chest trumps any concerns with hard-to-spot scars.
CAN I COMBINE MALE BREAST REDUCTION WITH ANOTHER PROCEDURE?
So long as you are in good health overall, it is usually safe to combine another cosmetic surgery with male breast reduction; discuss this possibility with Dr. Bulan during a consultation to determine your candidacy. Frequently, men opt to have liposuction on other parts of the body as well, like the abdomen, to more achieve nicer, more uniform contours across the entire torso.
WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE DR. BULAN FOR MY MALE BREAST REDUCTION?
Dr. Bulan is one of New Jersey’s finest plastic surgeons, with glowing patient reviews to endorse the quality of his work.
