Have years of smiling led to the appearance of “smile lines,” the parenthetical-looking nasolabial folds that run from the outer edges of your nose to the outer corners of your lips? Are you a happy person who is unhappy with the vertical lines that have developed above your upper lip?

If any of these scenarios sound familiar, the solution is not to stop smiling! Instead, the solution may be to undergo Juvéderm® injectable filler treatment with Northern New Jersey plastic surgeon Dr. Erwin Bulan. At Bulan Plastic Surgery, we can smooth away the pesky wrinkles around your mouth and nose with Juvéderm® nonsurgical treatment.

What Is Juvéderm®?

Juvéderm® is a hyaluronic acid (HA)-based, gel filler that Dr. Bulan injects into wrinkles, restoring lost volume and improving the appearance of the treated area.  It can also be used to augment the size or accentuate the shape of one’s lips to create a more youthful appearance.

HA is a substance that occurs naturally in the body. HA hydrates your cells, contributing to plump, healthy-looking skin. However, as you age, overexposure to sun and other factors diminish the amount of HA present in the skin. As HA decreases, skin loses volume, leading to undesirable facial folds and wrinkles.

The uplifting news is that Dr. Bulan can use an injectable filler such as FDA-approved Juvéderm® to replace lost HA and volume, and smooth out wrinkles. The best part about this dermal filler is that results last up to one year!

Juvéderm® Customized Cosmetic Treatment

Dr. Bulan can use this dermal filler to treat a range of skin types and colors. Juvéderm® is the first FDA-approved HA filler that has proven efficacy in those with darker skin complexions. It is also available in two formulas: Juvéderm® Ultra XC and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC. The former is more versatile and can treat a variety of facial folds and wrinkles. The latter is more robust and can treat deeper, more severe facial folds and creases. Thanks to Juvéderm’s multiple options, Dr. Bulan can customize Juvéderm® treatment to meet your unique needs.

What to Expect During Juvéderm® Treatment

Dr. Bulan performs Juvéderm® treatment in about 15 minutes, so you can undergo treatment on your lunch break, after you pick your children up from school or before a weekend getaway. Also, because HA fillers are typically biocompatible, you should not require allergy skin testing before undergoing treatment.

Although Dr. Bulan may apply a topical anesthetic before treatment, the most recent generation of Juvéderm® is formulated with lidocaine, an anesthetic used to maximize patient comfort during treatment. To perform the procedure, Dr. Bulan simply injects Juvéderm® into the targeted wrinkle or fold.

What to Expect After Juvéderm® Treatment

Juvéderm® is typically well tolerated and does not usually require any downtime. You may experience mild side effects, such as redness, bruising, tenderness, swelling, firmness or itching at the injection site, but these symptoms should subside in less than a week. You can apply an ice pack to the treated area to alleviate symptoms. Although side effects do not always occur, contact Dr. Bulan if symptoms last for longer than one week.

Be sure to avoid strenuous exercise, drinking alcohol or extended exposure to sun in the first 24 hours following treatment to minimize the risk of side effects or complications, and to maximize aesthetic effects.

You should notice an immediate improvement in targeted wrinkles or folds. Often, patients only need one treatment to achieve optimal results, but in some cases “touch up” treatments are needed; it depends on your individual response to Juvéderm®.
