Demand for Male Plastic Surgery Skyrockets

Recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show a surge in male demand for cosmetic treatment. Plastic surgery, which was once considered popular only among women, is now widely available for both sexes. Although every patient is considered on an individual basis, certain trends have emerged among men seeking plastic surgery. Here, Dr. Erwin Bulan profiles three types of men that commonly request plastic surgery.

The Business Executive

In the cutthroat job market, aging business executives must maintain their edge as best they can. “Looking the part” of a robust, energetic leader is crucial to job stability and advancement. Facial rejuvenation procedures (e.g., facelift, eyelid surgery) help treat noticeable signs of facial aging for a more youthful-looking visage. Even non-surgical treatment with Botox or dermal fillers can provide noticeable improvement and boost the confidence of a male candidate who is up for a promotion, raise or even a career switch.

The Competitive Bodybuilder

Bodybuilders have enviable physiques (and deservedly so, since they work so hard!). However, ASPS recently reported that one area many bodybuilders struggle with is their chest. Performance-enhancing anabolic steroids and/or hormone supplements can cause the development of excess breast tissue. This condition, called gynecomastia, may interfere with a competitive bodybuilder’s career. Male breast reduction treats gynecomastia and helps men that are judged by their physical appearance. Last year, more than 26,000 men — bodybuilders and non-bodybuilders — underwent breast reduction surgery.

The Exhausted Father

Just as many mothers desire a mommy makeover after having a baby, fathers are entitled to a “daddy do-over.” Men that have wrinkles, under-eye bags and other visible signs of sleeplessness and stress may opt for injectable treatment or another non-surgical skin rejuvenation procedure. Or, fathers that have accumulated extra fat around their midsection may pursue liposuction or abdominoplasty to treat the problem.
