innovative technique minimizes scarring after plastic surgery
Scarring after a surgical procedure is generally unavoidable. Certain patients are more prone to developing scars after surgery, based on factors like their skin type and the nature of the incision (e.g., depth, length). In addition, tension experienced at any surgical site, whether intended or unintended, is a stimulus for widening of scars.
Now, we are excited to be one of the first practices to incorporate an innovative scar management system called Embrace Advanced Scar Therapy.
HOW EMBRACE WORKS
During the body’s natural healing process, it produces collagen fibers to repair the damaged skin tissue. As the wound closes, the incision develops a slight degree of tension. In certain plastic surgical procedures such as tummy tucks, arm lifts and breast reduction/lifts, there is an inherent tendency for this tension due to the nature of the surgery. It is this tension that can trigger an overproduction of collagen, which causes scar tissue to build up over time. Excessive scar tissue leads to a bigger, wider and more visible scar.

Embrace dressings are the first silicone-based, “tension-unloading” dressings; what that means is that the bio-compatible elastic dressings relieve and redistribute skin tension to minimize the formation of scars and scar tissue. The dressings contract to protect the incision and surrounding tissue. The contractile tension of the Embrace dressing neutralizes the expansile stress from the surgical closure or any body movements.
Embrace can help reduce scarring after a number of common plastic and reconstructive surgery procedures, including:
- Breast augmentation
- Breast reduction
- Breast lift
- Abdominoplasty
- Post-bariatric body lift
- Thigh lift
The Embrace dressings should be used continuously for six to eight weeks, during the active stage of scar healing. Each Embrace dressing is single-use and designed to be worn for a week, and then swapped out with a new dressing. They are water-resistant, so they can be worn in the shower. For best results, they should not be submerged in water for a long period of time.
Clinical studies have shown that wearing Embrace dressings can significantly reduce the appearance of surgical scars. Plastic surgery candidates that are avoiding surgery out of fear of scarring will be thrilled to learn about this breakthrough therapy. We at Bulan Plastic Surgery are excited to be one of the first providers to incorporate this technology for our patients.
