look less tired with eyelid surgery
Are people asking if you’re tired even though you feel just fine? When you look in the mirror, does a tired face look back at you, although that does not reflect your inner life? Sagging eyelids contribute considerably to a tired, aged, and even angry appearance. Few surgeries do more to turn back the clock than eyelid surgery. Dr. Erwin Bulan explains how eyelid surgery refreshes your face and makes you look younger and more energized.
BLEPHAROPLASTY
Formally known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery involves the removal of excess fat and skin causing a tired or cross look. Patients can have the procedure performed on the upper and/or lower eyelids. It’s the droopy upper eyelids that result in a tired look. Lower eyelid surgery gets rid of bags and wrinkles under the eyes. Many people opt to have upper and lower eyelid surgery done at the same time to save on facility and anesthesia fees.
For most patients, blepharoplasty is a strictly cosmetic procedure and insurance will not cover it. However, in cases where the excess skin and fat were impeding the patient’s visual field, it is possible that your health insurance will pay for upper eyelid surgery.
BLEPHAROPLASTY PROCEDURE
In upper eyelid surgery, the plastic surgeon cuts into the natural eyelid creases and removes excess fat, skin, and muscle. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision is made below the lower lash line; excess skin and fat are then removed, or displaced fat is repositioned.
The entire process for combined upper and lower eyelid surgery takes about 45 minutes.
EYELID SURGERY RECOVERY
Eyelid surgery recovery is usually uneventful. Patients may experience bruising and swelling but any pain is usually minimized via the use of over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs). Most people recover within a day or so.
Expect to take a week off work as blurry vision is common during that time period.
EYELID SURGERY RESULTS
Once the bruising and swelling disappear, the results are in. One of the great things about blepharoplasty is that people don’t necessarily think you had cosmetic surgery. You simply look better. After eyelid surgery, people might comment that you look rested. Because that sagginess is gone, your eyes appear brighter. You look more alert, and you may find your visual field has widened without folds of excess skin drooping over your upper lash line.
In addition, the results of eyelid surgery last a long time. That’s especially true of lower eyelid surgery. We never stop aging so the results aren’t permanent. They may well last close to a decade. Much depends on how well you take care of the skin around your eyes, including staying out of the sun.
After that, a repeat procedure can continue making you look vibrant.
