rhinoplasty facts that might surprise you

Rhinoplasty surgery might seem straightforward: the procedure alters the size or shape of the nose to create a more attractive profile or better balance amongst the facial features. But how much do you really know about the procedure? Tap into the expertise of Dr. Erwin Bulan, from Bulan Plastic Surgery, who reveals rhinoplasty facts that might surprise you.

Rhinoplasty Is a Highly Requested Procedure

Last year over 223,000 rhinoplasty procedures were performed, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Most candidates want to fix one of the following:

  • An oversized or wide nose
  • A crooked nose
  • A bump or hump on the bridge of the nose
  • Oversized or “flared” nostrils
  • An upturned, downturned or bulbous tip

Some People Breathe (and Sleep) Easier after Combination Rhinoplasty Procedures

You might be surprised to learn that rhinoplasty can also be combined with other nose procedures to fix nasal airway function. For example, rhinoplasty can be combined with septoplasty to correct a deviated septum or turbinectomy to reduce oversized turbinates. Some patients find that they breathe and sleep easier after these problems are corrected.  In addition, the nerves that are responsible for your sense of smell are located in the nasal airway. The sense of smell can be improved with nasal airway surgery in combination with your rhinoplasty procedure.

More People Have Rhinoplasty in the Winter Months

Many people find it easier to schedule rhinoplasty in the winter months because they have breaks from work or school. Some experts believe the recovery is easier during cold weather than the hot, muggy summer months.

You Can “Preview” Your Results

Thanks to digital imaging technology, doctors can use computer programs to simulate your planned rhinoplasty results. This is helpful for developing the plan of treatment, albeit not a guarantee of results however. Most importantly, if you have selected a great rhinoplasty surgeon, you will probably find that your results are even better than the computer-generated preview.

Rhinoplasty Might Change Your Voice (But Probably Won’t)

Although quite rare, some rhinoplasty patients do notice a change in their voice after surgery. It is less likely when an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon performs the procedure.

It’s Not as Painful as You Think

Forget what you have heard about the operation and recovery. Patients tolerate it very well and have only mild discomfort, bruising and swelling during recovery. Ice packs and oral pain relievers can help minimize the discomfort. Even before your surgery, we utilize Arnica to minimize swelling and bruising, and counsel to avoid foods and medications that can increase your risks.

You Can’t Take Aspirin or Advil Prior to or After Surgery

Speaking of pain relievers, rhinoplasty patients must stop taking any medication and supplements that could cause bleeding about two weeks prior to surgery and a week after. This includes aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Aleve and Vitamin E and others (ask your surgeon for a list). You might be advised to take homeopathic herbs like Bromelain and Arnica Montana to accelerate healing and minimize post-operative bruising and swelling.
