stubborn fat: areas where weight is more challenging to lose

Losing weight with diet and exercise can help you shed pounds and achieve a healthier lifestyle, but some fatty areas hold on no matter how many calories you cut or carbohydrates you count. The abdomen, hips, thighs, and other body parts are notorious for resisting exercise plans and fad diets. At Bulan Plastic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeon can help you reach your dream body shape with liposuction for those stubborn areas.

WHAT CAUSES STUBBORN FAT?

Stubborn fat occurs in areas of the body that seem nearly impossible to target through traditional means. The “love handles,” thighs, and abdomen contain fat cells that the body uses as energy stores, making them physiologically resistant to exercise and diets. These areas are the last to respond or may not change at all.

While everyone has stubborn areas, how they appear depends on genetics and sex. Some lucky individuals may naturally have evenly distributed fat, but others may be prone to fatty upper arms or larger hips. Testosterone tends to make men accumulate more fat in their stomach region, while estrogen causes increased fat stores in the thighs and buttocks in women. Sometimes surgical treatment with liposuction is the only way to eliminate unwanted fat in these areas.

STUBBORN ABDOMINAL FAT

Age, sugar, and hormones can cause subcutaneous fat (pinchable fat under the skin) to accumulate in the abdomen and hips, causing a thick midsection. Weight gain in this area comes with other risks. Visceral fat is found deep in the abdominal cavity, padding the spaces between abdominal organs, and increases health concerns, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and breast cancer in women. While liposuction can’t address this type of fat, a healthy diet and exercise can decrease visceral fat.

Liposuction may help reduce visceral fat deep in the abdomen by improving range of motion for easier exercising, leading to better health and long-term results.

STUBBORN LOWER BODY FAT

People with pear or apple-shaped bodies tend to accumulate subcutaneous fat in their hips, buttocks, and thighs. Hormones, age, and genetics also influence fat deposits in these areas, and it’s especially challenging for women to burn fat in the lower body. Liposuction is often used to eliminate stubborn fat cells and may be combined with a thigh lift to further contour the area.

STUBBORN UPPER ARM FAT AND DOUBLE CHINS

The upper arms and submental area (under the chin) collect excess fat cells with weight gain and aging. “Bat wings” and “double chins” are a concern for many men and women, which are worsened by thinning, sagging skin tissue. Liposuction provides a thinner contour and may be combined with an arm lift or neck lift to reduce sagging skin simultaneously.
