Last year, close to 2 million cosmetic surgical procedures were performed in the United States. This number is up from 2017, with body-shaping procedures in particular seeing an increase over the previous year, according to a report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
According to the ASPS, the five most popular cosmetic surgical procedures were the following:
- Breast augmentation
- Liposuction
- Nose reshaping
- Eyelid surgery
- Tummy tuck
Below, the team at Bulan Plastic Surgery discusses these procedures and the report’s findings in more detail.
BREAST AUGMENTATION
Breast augmentation surgery was the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in 2018, with 313,735 surgeries performed. This number is up 4 percent from 2017. This is also our most common procedure performed here at Bulan Plastic Surgery, using the most up-to-date saline and silicone implants.
LIPOSUCTION
The number of liposuction procedures also increased in 2018. Last year, 258,558 liposuction procedures were performed, which is over 12,000 more procedures than in 2017.
One of the reasons liposuction is so popular is because surgeons can treat multiple areas of the body in one session. Plus, liposuction results are more dramatic than the results of non-invasive procedures. In addition, our current use of external radio frequency treatments post-op in conjunction with our liposuction procedure has dramatically improved liposuction results!
(Other body-shaping procedures, including thigh lifts and buttock augmentations, rose last year as well, but they weren’t as popular as the other surgical procedures included on this list.)
NOSE RESHAPING
Nose reshaping, also known as rhinoplasty, is one of two facial surgical procedures on this list. While the procedure is still among the top five, the number of nose reshaping surgeries decreased by 2 percent from 2017 to 2018. There were 213,780 nose reshaping surgeries performed last year.
EYELID SURGERY
Eyelid surgery is the second most popular facial surgical procedure, with 206,529 procedures performed in 2018. This number is also down from the year before (by 1 percent). The reason for the decrease in these facial procedures may have to do with emerging non-surgical options for wrinkles, fine lines and other signs of aging.
TUMMY TUCKS
Tummy tucks, unlike the other top body-shaping procedures, didn’t see a rise in 2018. The number stayed relatively constant at 130,081. Regardless of the trend, tummy tuck surgery remains one of the most important surgical procedures in the mommy makeover process.
