New Jersey plastic surgeon Dr. Erwin Bulan believes every tummy tuck patient should be armed with accurate, detailed information about their procedure. During surgical consultations, he does an excellent job informing patients of what to expect and how to plan. In the spirit of open communication, Dr. Bulan thought he would compile a list of five things all tummy tuck patients should know before surgery.
YOUR CHOICE OF SURGEON IS CRITICAL
The success of your surgery hinges on the talent and experience of your tummy tuck surgeon. On top of that, you will be seeing your surgeon a lot for pre-op planning and post-op appointments. Choose someone with great credentials that you feel comfortable with, and that you can talk to about personal, sometimes detailed, concerns.
HEALTHY PATIENTS USUALLY RECOVER QUICKER
It is important to go into your surgery in the best shape possible. Your chances of a quick and complication-free recovery increase when you are healthy and active. As you prep for surgery, you will need to stop smoking and avoid drinking excessively. You should also follow a nutritious diet, exercise regularly and try to limit (or at least manage) stress. The day before surgery, eat light meals and get plenty of rest.
GATHER YOUR SUPPORT TEAM
When it comes to your surgical recovery, don’t try to “go it alone.” During the first one to two weeks of recovery, your range of motion and activity level will be limited. You won’t be able to drive, and you may need assistance showering and getting to and from the bathroom, as well as eating and cleaning. Recruit a family member or loved one that can stay with you for at least the first 24 hours after surgery and then help you with child and pet care, meal preparation and other daily chores.
IT CAN TAKE AWHILE TO SEE YOUR FINAL RESULTS
Although you will likely notice initial results a few days after surgery, it can take up to a month or more for the swelling to completely resolve and for your abdominal contour to stabilize. Don’t weigh yourself or try to squeeze into skinny jeans too soon, or you might find yourself disappointed.
THE JOURNEY CAN BE EMOTIONAL
It is perfectly normal to experience a range of emotions throughout your tummy tuck experience. You may feel excited, anxious, sad, exhilarated, confused or worried at any point during the process. Prepare yourself for an emotional rollercoaster and remember that it will be worth it in the end!
